No Deadline Deals for Eagles: A Recap of NFC Teams' Trades
It's that time of year again - the NFL trade deadline. Teams across the league are frantically trying to improve their rosters and make a push towards the playoffs. However, for the first time since the COVID year in 2020, the Philadelphia Eagles and their General Manager, Howie Roseman, decided to stay put and not make any trades.
This may come as a surprise to some, given the Eagles' history of being active at the trade deadline. But upon closer examination, it's not a shock. The team has seen improved play from players like Josh Sweat and Nolan Smith, making the need for an edge rusher less urgent. And while positions like wide receiver, tight end, linebacker, and running back could have been upgraded, they were not pressing needs for the Eagles.
Meanwhile, some of the Eagles' rivals made big moves at the trade deadline. Let's take a look at some of the notable trades that went down.
The Commanders, who were in desperate need of a cornerback, traded a package of picks to the Saints for Marshon Lattimore, one of the best corners in the NFL. This move shows that the Commanders are serious about making a postseason run and are willing to invest in a player who is under contract through 2026. And the cost to acquire Lattimore was not too steep, making it a smart move for the Commanders.
In a surprising move, the Cowboys traded a 2023 second-round pick to the Panthers for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo. This trade raised a lot of eyebrows, as Mingo has limited experience and production in the NFL. The Cowboys also gave up more for Mingo than what they received for Amari Cooper in 2022. With a record of 3-5 and their star quarterback Dak Prescott out for multiple games, it's a bit puzzling as to why the Cowboys would be buyers at the deadline.
The Lions, who lost key pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the season, addressed their need for an edge rusher by trading for Za'Darius Smith from the Browns. Smith has five sacks this season and is under contract through 2025, making it a reasonable cost for the Lions. This move will help bolster their defense and give them a much-needed boost in their pass rush.
The Cardinals also made a move to improve their defense, trading for outside linebacker Baron Browning from the Broncos. Browning is a versatile player who can play both off-ball linebacker and edge rusher, making him a valuable addition to an undermanned Cardinals defense. With starter Dennis Gardeck out for the season, Browning will provide much-needed depth and talent to the Cardinals' defense.
As we can see, the Eagles may have chosen to stay put at the trade deadline, but their rivals were not afraid to make moves to improve their rosters. It will be interesting to see how these trades play out for each team and if they will make a significant impact on their success for the rest of the season.
