Brace for Snow: Weather Forecast for Eagles-Rams NFL Playoff Showdown in Philly
As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to host the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs on Sunday, there is a chance of snowfall during the game. The forecast is predicting frigid temperatures and a 60% chance of precipitation, which could potentially come in the form of snow or rain. This could make for a chilly and possibly slippery playing field when the two teams kick off at 3 p.m. ET.
According to Weather Underground, the temperature at kickoff is expected to be around 35 degrees, making it the second-coldest game the Eagles have hosted since the start of the 2022 season. While the cold may be a concern for some, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the game. The wind is also not expected to be a major factor, with gusts estimated to be around 8 to 10 mph. However, if the gusts do pick up to 15 or 20 mph, it could pose a challenge for the kickers on both teams.
The Rams, coming from the west coast, may be at a disadvantage in the cold weather, but that hasn't seemed to faze their quarterback, Matthew Stafford. Since joining the Rams in 2021, Stafford has played in only two games where the temperature was 40 degrees or below, with a record of 1-1. In a November 2021 game in Green Bay, Stafford threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns despite the chilly conditions. However, in a Week 16 matchup against the New York Jets, he only managed to throw for 110 yards and one touchdown in a 19-9 win. Overall, Stafford has a history of performing well in cold weather, with his most impressive game being a 520-yard passing performance in Green Bay back in 2011 when the temperature was just 31 degrees. In December 2020, he also threw for 402 yards in a game with a kickoff temperature of 35 degrees in Chicago.
On the other hand, the Eagles have a 3-1 record this season in games where the temperature was 40 degrees or below, including their recent 22-10 wild-card playoff win over the Green Bay Packers. In a Week 16 matchup against the Commanders, quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 258 yards and five touchdowns in a game where the temperature was 31 degrees at kickoff.
The cold weather may also provide an opportunity for Eagles' running back Saquon Barkley to shine. In the three games he played, including the playoffs, where the temperature was 40 degrees or below, Barkley averaged 111.3 rushing yards per game. This is slightly lower than his average of 137.7 yards per game in the 14 games where the temperature was above 40 degrees. In their earlier matchup this season, Barkley had a standout performance with 255 rushing yards in a 37-20 win over the Rams, but that game was played indoors.
Despite the potential for cold and snowy conditions, both teams have proven they can handle adverse weather. The Eagles have been successful in similar conditions this season, while Stafford has a track record of performing well in cold weather. It will be interesting to see how these factors play out on the field during the highly anticipated divisional round game. Will the cold weather benefit one team over the other? Only time will tell.
